Hark Food & Nutrition

What is the texture and piece size of Hark?

+

Hark pieces are bite-sized and air-dried to be soft, chewy, and easy to eat—even for picky or senior pups. They look a little bit like pieces of jerky, but they are softer and can be more easilty chewed. Our senior chihuahua, Little Paw, who is missing quite a few teeth, has no problem eating her bowl of Hark!

Does Hark contain grains?

+

Yes, Hark includes grains—and that’s a good thing. We steer clear of grain-free trends because of the potential link between grain-free diets and a heart condition called dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). While research is ongoing, many grain-free formulas are heavy in legumes, which might play a role. Hark contains zero legumes, just to be safe. Instead, we include a small amount of gluten-free whole grains. Why? Because they’re rich in essential vitamins, minerals, and easy-to-digest carbohydrates that help fuel your dog’s daily adventures. Think of it like your own diet—carbs = energy, especially when they come from clean, simple sources.Curious what else goes into Hark? Our recipes are loaded with functional ingredients like eggs, flaxseed, turmeric, chicken, and fish oil—each chosen for real nutritional benefit. In Hark free from legumes (peas and beans) and other anti-nutrients?

+

Yes. Hark contains zero legumes.

Many dog foods include cheap proteins derived from peas and legumes to increase protein quantities without relying on more expensive meat. Heavy legumes are linked to dilated cardiomyopathy. Legumes and potatoes have also been show to be "anti-nutrients" - ingredients that block or prevent the absorption of nutrients.

Hark recipes are formulated using high quality wholel muscle meat and organ protein, vegetables, and fruits. Absolutely no beans, peas, potatoes, or any sneaky derivates of these ingredients.

What proteins do you offer?

+

Hark recipes are formulated using only USDA‑inspected, 100% human-grade meat from trusted U.S. suppliers. All the meats in our recipes are cuts of whole muscle meat or organs. We use absolutely no meat "meals", animal digest, spray-dried animal plasma, or any of the other sketchy animal by-products commonly used in "feed grade" pet food. The meats we choose are the same meats we would purchase for our own dinner table, ensuring that your pup is getting high-quality protein in every bowl.

Why do I feed my dog less Hark than their old food?

+

Hark is more nutrient-dense, so you feed fewer cups for the same (or better) nutrition.

Does Hark you meet AAFCO nutritional standards?

+

Yes—every Hark recipe meets or exceeds AAFCO’s standards for complete and balanced meals.

Do your foods follow WSAVA guidelines?

+

Are Hark recipes gut friendly?

+

Yes! Hark includes gut-friendly ingredients like pumpkin, inulin (from chicory root), and ginger to aid digestion.

Why do you air-dry your food?

+

Air-drying is what makes Hark so powerful—it’s clean, convenient, and keeps all the good stuff intact.
We start with a large quantity of nutritious ingredients—more than 3.5X by volume—then gently air-dry using a slow, low-heat process that preserves the natural nutrition and flavor of every ingredient. It’s kind of like dehydrating—only smarter. The result is an extremely nutrient-dense, shelf-stable food that is fresh and irresistibly delicious to dogs!

This method also includes a built-in safety step (approved by the FDA and USDA) that uses time and temperature to eliminate harmful pathogens. So you get all the benefits of a raw diet, without the mess, freezer space, or food safety worries. Just open, pour, and serve.

What steps ensure Hark’s food is safe?

+

Hark’s air-drying method balances food safety with real nutrition. The result: a ridiculously nutritious food that is also shelf stable and delicious.

We use a proprietary air-drying process that includes a time-and-temperature “kill step” validated by third-party experts. That means our food is gently heated just enough—and long enough—to eliminate harmful pathogens, while still preserving the natural nutrients, flavor, and moisture dogs need to thrive. It’s a method that aligns with USDA safety standards and is backed by rigorous outside testing.

Other types of dog food don’t always offer that balance. Raw and freeze-dried diets often skip the time-temperature safety step entirely, which can increase the risk of contamination. On the flip side, traditional kibble is made with high heat and pressure through a process called extrusion. This strips away nutrients and flavor and allows manufacturers to rely on lower-quality ingredients like feed-grade meat or byproducts.

At Hark, we don’t cut corners. Our process is designed to protect your dog’s health and also to taste delicious.

Who creates your recipes?

+

Our recipes are developed by board-certified veterinarians who specialize in dog nutrition, canine health, and recipe formulation. Each recipe is also inspected and tested by PhD food scientists.

Where is Hark food made?

+

We do not believe in outsourcing our production to external factories where we can't oversee and guarantee quality. We make Hark Food For Dogs in our own human-grade, FDA-inspected kitchen with our own team. We make it in small batches each week so you can always feed fresh.

How does Hark protect against avian flu (H5N1)?

+

Safety Isn’t an Afterthought. It’s Baked In.

The FDA recently updated its guidance to flag the H5N1 virus (Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza) as a known risk when using raw or unpasteurized poultry or beef in pet food. Brands relying on raw or minimally processed meat now need to prove they have a food safety plan that accounts for it.

At Hark, we’ve built food safety into our process from day one. Instead of risking contamination with raw or freeze-dried meat, we gently air-dry our recipes using a third-party validated time-and-temperature step—often called a “kill step.” This ensures harmful pathogens like H5N1 are eliminated, while natural nutrients, taste, and texture are preserved.

Our process not only meets the latest FDA guidance—it goes beyond it. Because when it comes to your dog’s food, we believe safety should never be optional.

How long does Hark stay fresh?

+

Hark is most delicious when served fresh. That's why we make and ship fresh batches every week in our own kitchen! Hark food for dogs is shelf stable and when stored properly in a sealed bag, will last up to 1 year.

Does Hark contain synthetic ingredients?

+

Absolutely not. Hark is one of the only food for dogs on the market that does not rely on a synthetic vitamin supplement to balance the diet. We achieve the AAFCO standards for a complete and balanced diet for dogs entirely through the use of whole ingredients.

How is Hark able to make food without using synthetic additives?

+

Most dog food companies formulate a recipe to meet cost targets, then add synthetic chemicals to fill nutritional gaps in order to meet AAFCO standards. From the start we committed to making recipes that were nutritionally complete and balanced without any synthetic additives. It took us 2+ years and hundreds of recipes, but we did it. All Hark recipes are nutritionally complete and balanced using whole ingredients - meats, grains, fruits, vegetables, and herbs, without any synthetics. Just as nature intended.

How does Hark Raw Food for Dogs improve my dog’s dental health?

+

Dogs aren’t supposed to eat mush, yet most raw and fresh diets are just that - mushy food with no resistance for their teeth. Over time, this results in weakened teeth and gums.

Hark Food for Dogs is served in air-dried, bite-sized pieces that provide gentle friction that cleans teeth. Dogs LOVE the chewy crunch!

Plus, our recipes include ground bone for calcium and other functional ingredients that help strengthen teeth.

Does Hark meet AAFCO guidelines?

+

Hark Food for Dogs is formulated to meet the AAFCO nutrient profiles for all life stages, including the specific needs of large-breed puppies. Our food provides the essential nutrients required for both growth and adult maintenance.

How should I portion out the food?

+

You can pour from the bag using your best judgment, or you can use a measuring cup or scale. There is a feeding guide on every bag, and you can find full feeding instructions here.

Can I combine Hark with other foods like kibble?

+

Yes. Feeding Hark 100% will deliver the full benefits of a complete and balanced air-dried raw diet, but even partially feeding Hark Food for Dogs will deliver benefits to your dog. If you feed twice a day, you could feed one meal with Hark and another with your other food. Or, you can mix Hark with other food at each meal.

Feeding Hark

How do I transition my dog to Hark food?

+

You should introduce Hark gradually over 7–10 days—start with 25% Hark and 75% their old food, slowly increasing to 100% Hark.

How long will one order of Hark last?

+

Depending on your dog's size and appetite, a bag of Hark typically lasts between 2–6 weeks. When you place your first order, we'll ask for your dog's weight and activity level, and will recommend the best order size.

Am I feeding my dog too little?

+

Hark is more nutrient-dense than most food for dogs, so you may notice you're feeding less by volume than with other foods.

Each cup of Hark delivers 610–650 calories, depending on the recipe—that’s nearly double the calorie density of many conventional dog foods like kibble, which often contain fillers and loq quality ingredients that don't add nutrient value. So while the bowl might look smaller, it’s packed with the same (or better) nutrition your dog needs to thrive.

Use your dog’s body as a guide—if ribs are hard to feel or they're gaining quickly, scale back. If they’re losing weight or acting hungry, feed a bit more.

How much should I really feed my dog?

+

Hark is nutrient-dense, so you’ll likely feed less by volume than you’re used to. Many traditional feeding charts overshoot it. They assume your dog isn’t getting treats, isn't carrying a few extra pounds, and needs more calories than they actually do. This is part of why 59% of dogs in the US are overweight or obese, according to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention.

With Hark, you get smarter portions that match how real dogs eat. Start with the feeding chart on the bag and adjust based on your dog’s energy, build, and activity.

What dog food should I feed my puppy?

+

Absolutely. Puppies are growing fast—building bones, brains, and boundless energy—so they need food that keeps up. That’s why we recommend starting with our 100% Human-Grade Chicken recipe, which is naturally a bit higher in fat, making it a great choice for growing pups who need extra fuel.

Even large breed puppies (who will weigh 70+ lbs as adults) can enjoy Hark from day one. Our recipes are formulated with carefully balanced calcium and phosphorus to support healthy bone development during those crucial growth months.

Most dogs reach adulthood between 8–24 months. Smaller breeds tend to mature closer to 12 months, while giant breeds can take up to two years. Once your puppy is full-grown, you can stick with their favorite recipe—or switch things up to a recipe with less fat like our Beef recipe, based on their activity level and preferences.

What is the best dog food for adult dogs?

+

Any Hark recipe can work—choose based on your dog’s energy level, size, and preferences.

What is the best dog food for senior dogs?

+

Chicken tends to be easiest on older tummies—lower in fat, easier to chew, and easy to digest.

What is the best dog food for dogs that need to gain weight?

+

Hark’s Chicken recipe is slightly higher in calories and healthy fats—great for dogs needing a little extra padding.

We support many rescue organizations and when people adopt through Hark, we give them their first month of food for free. We generally recommend our chicken recipe to underweight shelter dogs.

What recipe helps dogs lose weight?

+

Hark’s Beef recipe is slightly lower in calories and fat—great for dogs needing to lose a few lbs!
